We started taking bookings in our lovely granite Cornish holiday cottages 20 years ago! Where does the time go….

So much has changed in those 20 years and so have our guests. Die hard self catering guests seem few and far between now. I would like to make our new guests aware that by booking direct with an owner you can save loads on the cost of a relaxing break in Cornwall with your family and dog. It is very simple, the owners do not charge you a booking fee. Nor do they have to cover the massive commission paid to the big boys, the agents that come up on google left, right and center. So easy to click on. I suggest you find your ideal cottage on an free standing owner run web site to slash the cost of your holiday. We might be on page 5 but is it that difficult to look a little harder. Many owners, including us, are happy to do a deal and as long as you respect their cottage they will look after you and your pennies. Most guests have their own holiday insurance so no need to be overcharged for that on a main letting agent either. Quite often, it means the owners are around which means if something goes wrong in your cottage they are there to fix it and sort it out.

We could tick all your boxes on the Cornwall holiday that you deserve. Walking distance to the local village Pub. 5 miles from lovely Falmouth. 15 mins from the sea but on the edge of a peaceful village that’s not overrun by noisey tourists! Less than an hour from The Eden Project or Land’s End. The coast 5 miles away.

We live in the old farm house in front of the cottages, on hand if need be.

You are hidden away in peace to relax, explore and re-charge.

Ruby Farmhouse used to be a Dairy farm many years ago before then there was all the tin mining and of course we had Porkellis mine. So much history to explore.

Please do feel free to contact me from our contact page or give me a call and ask about the cottages and if I can do you a decent deal on a short Spring break. Out of season, is always just perfect.

If, much like me, you are falling in love with the new Poldark Series, I swore I wouldn’t but it’s too late now, or maybe it’s just Ross Poldark? Maybe you would like to come down and visit some of the places the books were , and still are, based upon and then visit some of the filming locations. Thanks to “Visit Cornwall”, below you will find enough details to start planning your trip. We at Ruby Farmhouse Holiday Cottages https://holidaycornishcottages.co.uk just happen to be not too far away from several of the most beautiful locations. (Less than an hour in three cases, about 20 mins from Church Cove.) So get planning.

Like everyone else, at Visit Cornwall HQ, we are really enjoying the much-anticipated BBC adaptation remake of Winston Graham’s Poldark.

The trailer

The first episode appeared on our screens 8 March, 9pm on BBC One and runs until the end of April. See the full Poldark trailer here.

The story

Based on Winston Graham’s acclaimed novels set in Cornwall in the 18th Century, Poldark tells the story of Ross Poldark, an Army officer who returns to England after fighting in the American War of Independence to discover that his fiancee Elizabeth had believed him dead and has since married his cousin. Poldark then marries his maid, Demelza but is forever torn between the two women.

The filming

The long-awaited BBC drama was shot in Cornwall and other parts of the south-west. When the cast and crew filmed in Cornwall during the summer of 2014 they caused quite a flurry of excitement. Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson were spotted up and down the county.

Here is Visit Cornwall’s behind-the-scenes guide to the towns and beaches that took a turn in the spotlight:

Charlestown
Charlestown near St Austell, famed for its collection of ships and traditional appearance, has long caught the attention of location managers and in some scenes plays the role of the principal town. As you wander along the side of the original Grade II Listed harbour complete with Tall Ships, you can almost imagine that you’ve been cast as an extra or have been transported to Graham Winston’s 18th Century setting.

Church Cove Gunwallow
Church Cove Gunwallow on The Lizard relived its smugglings past when Aidan Turner and a hoard of other cast members and extras descended to film night-time ship wrecking scenes. While the events of the night highlight the nicer side of Turner’s character, the villagers don’t come off in such a good light – away from the cameras though and the scene on a normal day is a much more peaceful. An attractive sandy cove overlooked by the tiny church of St Wynwallow.

Porthgwarra
Once a thriving fishing cove, the beautiful Porthgwarra sits at the heart of St Aubyn Estates and boasts a peaceful existence with its days surrounded by wildflowers and birdlife. The tunnel cut through the rock makes it perfect for swimming and rock pooling while the South West Coast Path offers unsurpassed views. Stop in the Porthgwarra Cove Cafe (seasonal) or pack a traditional picnic for a circa 18th Century Poldark experience.

Bodmin Moor
The cast and crew found themselves on Bodmin Moor for a large part of their time in Cornwall. Scenes featuring the exterior of Ross Poldark’s cottage, Nampara, were shot here along with many capturing the cast on horseback. With a rugged character and wild streak, Bodmin Moor provides the perfect backdrop to Poldark’s plot of passion and family dramatics.

Botallack to Levant
Location managers couldn’t resist the rich mining heritage of the stretch of west Cornwall coast linking Botallack and Levant. Cameras rolled with Levant Mine playing the role of the fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill while Owles and Crowns near Botallack stared as Wheal Leisure.

Padstow area
For some of the cliff scenes the filming action moved to the Padstow area. Fans of north Cornwall will recognise the spectacular views across the Camel Estuary and Tregirls beach, while the beauty of the wide sandy beach of Porthcothan is hard to miss in the scenes featuring Poldark’s fictional Nampara Cove.

St Agnes Head
Another area that enjoyed a taste of Hollywood is St Agnes Head where iconic engine houses perch serenely on the cliff-tops offering a silent reminder of Cornwall’s mining heyday. A natural location choice, it doubles as Nampara Valley in the show.

Truro
While Corsham in Wiltshire doubled as Truro for filming, the City itself was Winston Graham’s true inspiration for the story and was the location of choice for the world premiere of the series. Producers, writers and the headline cast joined lucky locals for an exclusive viewing of the first episode and won their first of many rave reviews.

Further afield and filming took place in Bristol – where battle scenes were recreated at Ashton Hill Woods – and Chavenage House, an Elizabethan manor house in Tetbury, Gloucestershire.

Make like Ross and Demelza and step into the 18th Century world of mining, smuggling and romance with a Poldark experience.

For those of our guests who have already planned to come stay and for those of you yet to decide where to go this year, there follows a little taster of what is going on in Cornwall this July. Before I start there are only a few weeks left in Dingley Cottage during July. So best shake a leg if you want to come and chill during July.

Just click here for all the information for Mevagissey Feast Week which runs from 29 June to 4th July with lots of delicious food and drink and fun.

Another favourite is the Polo on the Beach at Watergate Bay. Held this year on 5th and 6th of July it’s a rare chance to see polo played in a spectacular and unique location. You don’t have to be a polo fan to enjoy this, the champagne bar makes it a great day out for parents; the fun atmosphere makes it a great day out for everyone. To be clear, the tide is out; the horses aren’t swimming!

Slightly later in the month and a lot closer to the cottages (about 3 miles away) is the Stithians Agricultural Show held on the 14th July. Billed as Cornwall’s biggest one day show, it’s a must see day out. There is a huge range of animal show classes, both livestock and pets. Also dog agility which I must encourage Arran to enter our wire haired pointer Bingers in to. The thought of him veering off course going over the ring fence and helping himself to whatever free food was around in the crowd would be too funny to miss. Arran has refused to enter the dog show since, in our first year of residence in Cornwall, a judge said that Mr Darcy our weimaraner was too fat. He’s a lot thinner now but Arran has never forgiven them! There are also classic cars, steam engines and a funfair to enjoy. Finally on the 19th July the Camborne Show is on. Camborne is about 15 minutes to the north of the holiday cottages it’s another fantastic local show with show jumping, heavy horse demonstrations, dog show and agility, livestock classes and lots more.

If none of the above get you excited there is always the sailing, the surfing the eating the coast path the out door theatre, the many gardens…………….the list goes on…….and you could just pop over to our Make it Special page. Long may the sun shine.
